Plenty Historical Society was formed in 2001.

On the 1st of January, 2000 some of the long-standing residents of Plenty gathered at the CFA building for a New Year’s Day breakfast to celebrate the beginning of the new millennium. We shared a concern that with increasing development Plenty could lose its character and heritage; formation of an historical society to preserve and share our heritage and development as a community was proposed.

In February 2001 residents were invited to a meeting at the Plenty hall to discuss this proposal and the Plenty Historical Society was formed. The Society was incorporated in 2001 and became a registered charity in 2012.

Our vision is to create and nurture an active and sustainable organization that is assertive in preserving the unique natural and historical environment and culture of Plenty and district in complement with the Nillumbik Shire Council’s heritage overlay. In this way, we seek to respect and recognize the diversity of the community, and enhance knowledge and pride in the community and respect for the Society.

Plenty Historical Society is affiliated with the Royal Historical Society Victoria, Nillumbik Shire Council and the network of historical societies and heritage organizations across the Shire.

Key Achievements

Some of the key achievements of the Society include restoration and updating of the Plenty War Memorial Gates and development of a garden for reflection around the Memorial.

The Centenary of Plenty celebrations in 2013. The Society instigated planning for the celebrations and led the steering committee, representative of the community services and clubs, that culminated in a very successful weekend of centenary celebrations. Placement of heritage overlays on a number of buildings of significance within the township.

We strongly advocated for the retention of cultural and ecological heritage during consultation for the upgrade and realignment of Yan Yean Road including preservation of the former Uniting Church. Following considerable negotiation and discussion with the Uniting Church of Australia Victorian and Tasmanian Synod, Nillumbik Council and Major Roads Projects Victoria the church building was saved. It was relocated to the Plenty Heritage Park and beautifully restored by Major Roads Projects Victoria.

Now known as the Plenty Historic Church it is the home of the Society and a wonderful community resource. The church building is available for community use for more information please see our contact page.
